Description:
Perhaps because of the sheer individuality of the works of Sorabji (1892-1988), a self-taught composer and piano player, listeners seem to take the stance of either liking them immensely or pretending that they are not there. One reason for this is the length of the piece. The Opus Clavicembalisticum (which is difficult to read) takes four to five hours to play in its entirety, and the Symphonic Variations is nearly nine hours long. The "Symphonic Variations" takes nearly 9 hours to play. The score is also famous for its complexity, and many people enjoy just looking at it. Because of the complexity of the work, there are naturally a limited number of pianists who can play it, but Habermann is one of the few "authorized pianists" that Sorabji has approved to play his own works, especially Pastiche No. 3 "Puppy Waltz," and no one has played it better than him. It is such a masterpiece that it is said that no one has ever played it better or will ever play it better than him. That masterpiece has been made to look like this....The early works on CD1 are still readable in form, but by CD2.3, they are so unique that I hesitate to even set foot in them, but if you can listen to them laughing, you will be certified as an "advanced classical geek" for sure. And if you can play them with a smile on your face.... That will already open a new door for you. Naxos Japan
