When we think of Bernstein (1918-1990), we tend to think only of his flamboyant and passionate performances as a composer and conductor, but in fact he also wrote such simple, beautiful, and exciting works. However, he had close friends all over the world, and most of these works were written for them. His four series of "Anniversary Music" were published in 1944, 1948, 1964, and 1989, respectively, and this album contains the first and last series. The "13 Anniversaries" were written over a long span from the 1960s to the 1980s, and these pieces are related to a number of others and recycled in later works (e.g., track 21, "In Memory of Ellen Getz," was later "Aria and Barcarolle").You can't help but listen to Bernstein's passion overflow into this little piece.
