This is a collection of works by American composer Haskell Small (1948–). His works have been performed throughout Europe, as well as in China and Japan, and are highly regarded for their rich expressiveness and solid musicality. This album features three of his representative works. “War Lullaby,” featuring narration and piano, was commissioned by pianist Naseri; it conveys the sorrow of war deep within the piano’s tone, which at times cannot hide its rawness. “Renoir’s Feast,” commissioned by the Phillips Collection, was composed to commemorate the return of the museum’s flagship work, “Luncheon on the Grass.” The three etudes are works that completely eschew programmatic elements, focusing solely on the movement of sound.
