The October 25 performance of Berg's "Wozzeck" by the Deutsche Oper Berlin, a commemorative opening performance of the Nissay Theatre, was also the first performance of the same work in Japan. Although atonal in technique, the psychological suspense was stimulating, with dramatic effects that anticipate today's TV dramas and movies. While the performance is extremely difficult, the singers show amazing acting ability. Holreiser is also said to have conducted the entire work from memory, to the surprise of all concerned.
