Boris Papandopulo is one of the leading composers and conductors of 20th-century Croatia. Because he held key positions, such as opera house director, during World War II, he was suspected of collaborating with the fascist regime after the war, but his reputation was later restored. While grappling with the “Socialist Realism” demanded under the socialist regime, he developed a unique style that flexibly incorporated folk music, Eastern-inspired sounds, and even the twelve-tone technique. His Symphony No. 2, premiered in 1946, is one of his representative works from the early postwar period. Comprising five movements that depict “the artist’s journey from darkness to light,” the entire piece is unified by a single motif and woven with folk elements and richly exotic colors. “The Witches’ Round Dance” is a symphonic scherzo for piano and orchestra composed in 1959. Inspired by a South Slavic legend of a dragon, this fantastical work depicts a wild and mysterious world through the use of a unique scale featuring alternating whole and half steps, as well as sharp dissonances. The piano, racing across the keys like a storm, and the orchestra, radiating vivid colors, merge into a single entity, making this a masterpiece that showcases Papandopro’s rich imagination and exceptional orchestration.
