Volume 5 of this series tracing Haydn’s musical journey features his early Symphonies Nos. 5 and 6, which retain the style of the basso continuo; the elegant Symphony No. 22, composed after a hiatus of about 20 years; and the mature Symphony No. 44 from his London period, offering a comprehensive overview of the evolution of his style. In addition, this release features the world premiere recording of Helena Winkelmann’s “ThreesomeinaHigh-den,” a work commissioned for this project. Based on Symphony No. 44, this homage humorously depicts biographical anecdotes, such as the gluttonous relatives who troubled him, his self-encouragement through his own “Hymn to the Emperor,” and the commotion of musicians enjoying the wine provided as part of their pay. Trio Gaspar was formed in 2010 by musicians from Germany, Greece, and the United Kingdom.
