Description:

The young Swedish virtuoso Johan Dahlene, who has received acclaim for his concerto recordings of Tchaikovsky, Barber, Nielsen, and Sibelius, takes on the popular violin concerto works Mendelssohn and Bruch, as well as Vaughan Williams' "Fried Hibari The latest album features the popular Mendelssohn and Bruch violin concertos, as well as Vaughan Williams' "Fried Lark. In the Mendelssohn concerto, she is joined by Marin Broman, and in the Bruch concerto by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Gemma New, and their performance is full of lyricism and brilliance. The album's final piece, "Fried Lark," was originally composed for violin and piano in 1914, and later became widely known in its orchestral version. The arrangement for mixed chorus and violin by Paul Drayton (b. 1944), a composer, conductor, and pianist, is performed here instead of the usual version. This edition adds new poignancy and breadth to the music by adding a wordless vocal line and text excerpts from poems by the English poet George Meredith. The free cadenza of the solo violin weaves a melody reminiscent of birdsong, while the chorus acts as a bridge between earth and sky, bringing out more vividly the work's sense of unity with nature. Drayton dedicated this arrangement to the Swedish Chamber Choir, and in this recording, the choir is conducted by Kaspars Putninsh, whose rich harmonies bring the work to a new level. Naxos Japan
