Description:
First release! Berglund and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe perform the Sibelius Cycle in the composer's homeland on film. This is Berglund's third and last concert with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (COE), with whom he recorded the complete Sibelius: Symphonies, in his hometown of Helsinki the year after the completion of the complete cycle. The CD with the COE, which realized the size of the orchestra in Helsinki in Sibelius' time with skilled players from all over Europe, is still highly acclaimed for its transparent and exquisite performance, but here the exuberance of the orchestra members who had embarked on the Sibelius homeland also adds to the dynamic performance. The performance is truly dynamic, with the orchestra members' exuberance in Sibelius' homeland added to the performance. Berglund, called the "Maestro of the Left Hand" because he holds the baton with his left hand, conducts with great vigor and expression. The original disc commentary (in English and Japanese) includes recollections by COE principal oboist Douglas Boyd and an interview with Berglund by Veijo Murtmäki. The interview with Berglund by Veijo Murtomäki includes a recollection by COE principal oboist Douglas Boyd and an interview with Berglund by Veijo Murtomäki. Pervo Berglund (1929-2012) was born in Helsinki and studied violin from early on. After graduating from the Sibelius Academy, he studied in Vienna and Salzburg, and from 1949-58 was the first violinist of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. From 1962 to 1971, he was the Principal Conductor of the Helsinki Symphony Orchestra, and from 1975 to 1979 he was the Music Director of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. He also served as principal conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Royal Danish Orchestra. He has a particularly strong reputation for his performances of Sibelius' works, and has completed a recording of the complete symphonies every ten years with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (1972-77), the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra (1984-87), and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (1995-97), all to great acclaim.
