Description:
From an early age, Busoni lived up to his reputation as a child prodigy and a virtuoso pianist. As a composer, he left some 200 works, but all of his chamber works were written in the early years of his creative career. The first of his violin sonatas was conceived in 1889, and the second was written almost ten years later, in 1898. While the first sonata is a study sonata that shows the influence of Brahms and his predecessors, the second sonata has almost established its own style, and it seems to have been a "work of confidence" for Busoni himself, with an impressive piano part as well as a technically demanding violin part. The sonata is divided into three parts: a relaxed first part, a lively second part, and then the third part, a vivid variation on the theme of Bach's chorale "How fortunate are you, O friend of my soul". Ingolf Truban, who was once trusted by Celibidacke as the first concertmaster of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, gives a brilliant performance of the entire piece. Naxos Japan
