[What Kind of Music Was Entrusted to the Flutes of That Era, to Be Heard During the Beethoven Commemorative Year… Discovering a Hidden World Through Early Instruments] The RAMEE label, which introduces us to a variety of rare auditory experiences in early music, presents a world of chamber music centered on the early 19th-century flute. Performed on a model instrument by Grenser of Dresden—from a time when the number of keys had hardly increased from that of the 18th-century flute traverso—and accompanied by a fortepiano, the program features the music of the renowned master Kurau, who was born in Germany and made his mark in Denmark. Often referred to as the “Beethoven of the flute world,” this prolific composer’s intricate sonic universe is well known to performers; however, returning to the instruments of that era allows one to appreciate its richness even more fully. Furthermore, when heard alongside these works, the Serenade, Op. 41—an arrangement supervised by the composer himself and based on Beethoven’s early work (the Trio Serenade, Op. 25)—suddenly takes on a whole new charm. Amid the numerous large-scale projects marking the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth in 2020, the spotlight is beginning to shine on these lesser-known works, which have not received much attention until now. Moreover, with an increasing number of performers now adopting this approach using period instruments, we are entering an era where we can get closer than ever before to the true essence of Beethoven, the “Master of Music.” The beautiful film *The Golden Rooms of Paris* (BAC171/BAC571/ NYDX-50054), and Shuan Chai, a historical pianist who has formed a long-standing duo with her.
