Born in Naples and died in Madrid, Spain, Domenico Scarlatti was a composer who left 555 keyboard sonatas and established modern keyboard technique. He is said to have begun composing with great enthusiasm when he was appointed music director of the Portuguese court chapel, where he gave lessons on keyboard to Princess Maria Barbara and Prince Ferdinand. They include works with bass and solo melodic parts, and show the influence of the violin technique that he seems to have learned in Venice. La Tempesta, led by Silvia Marquez Churilla, is an ensemble formed in 2000 that uses ancient instruments. The ensemble has been attracting attention in the Spanish classical music world, and their skillful technique covers the unpredictable rhythms and flow characteristic of Domenico Scarlatti, resulting in a highly accurate performance.
