Newly Discovered Mass Included!In the spring of 2018, Pergolesi's newly discovered work, the Mass in D Major, caused a stir in the newspapers and music magazines. It was touted as the first discovery in nearly 300 years, but in fact it had already been performed and recorded in 2016 under the direction of Giulio Prandi. After writing his lifetime masterpiece "Stabat Mater," Pergolesi died of tuberculosis at the age of 26, leaving behind about 10 operas, cantatas, and instrumental pieces during his short life. Due to his posthumous popularity, a number of forgeries circulated, but this is a genuine work, composed around 1733-1734. Musicologists have reproduced the piece by patching together scores that had been scattered in libraries throughout Europe. The album also includes another motet, "Dignas laudes resonemus," an undiscovered motet by Pergolesi. The Ghislieri Choir & Consort, which celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2018 with Petersen, Fumagalli, and other talented singers as soloists, performs two masterpieces, revealing an unknown side of Pergolesi.
