80 years after the war ----. Akira Sakata, 80 years old, respectfully submits this message. More than half a century after joining the Yosuke Yamashita Trio in 1972, Akira Sakata, 80 years old this year, continues to be active globally. His new band, "Akira Sakata SOS," has repeatedly formed and dismantled various groups. The members are Akira Sakata, a leading figure in free jazz, Nana Omori, a pianist whose music intersects free jazz and contemporary music, and Manabu Sakata (Akira Sakata's son), a drummer who works without borders from pop music to jazz. The three first performed together in 2017, and later added Shinobu Kawai (bass) and began performing as "Akira Sakata COCODA. In 2023, they released the CD "Withered Sunflowers," which was well received. In 2025, the band was renamed Akira Sakata SOS, and participated in festivals such as Earth Day and Haruichiban, and in June, went on a six-stop tour of Kure, Tokushima, Okayama, Onomichi, Shimane, and Hiroshima. In addition to his longtime fans, he is well received by people of all ages and both men and women who have had no contact with free jazz (including those who are surprised and burst out laughing). August 15, 2025 "Akira Sakata SOS" 1st Album "In a Sentimental Mood" released. Mixed and mastered by Jim O'Rourke. Sakata says, "I want you to look at the unpredictable performance every time you listen to the album like a scenery seen from a car window. We hope you will catch the sound of SOS.
