Description:

Mizuko Tsukatani’s “Goldberg Synthesis” Version Is Finally Complete! A Goldberg patchwork woven from Showa-era music and sounds, masterfully crafted using digital techniques. The title of this work, which Mizuko Tsukatani is releasing as the ninth installment in her Goldberg Variations series, is “Synthesis.” “Synthesis” refers to the process of combining elements and is also the etymological root of the word “synthesizer.” It signifies not merely mixing sounds, but a creative process that combines diverse materials and experiences to generate new meaning and value. The theme of this work is “deconstructing and reconstructing the components that make up music.” Even though the instruments differ, might there not be commonalities in the sounds they produce, the processes by which those sounds are generated and transformed, and the essence inherent in their resonance? In this work, taking J.S. Bach’s *Goldberg Variations*—a piece as vast and intricate as a matryoshka doll—as a starting point, Minashiko explores the unique characteristics and possibilities of various keyboard instruments. While drawing out the unique charm and expressive power of each instrument to the fullest, everything ultimately returns to the unshakable identity of the original work. However, the “synthesis” in this work does not refer solely to instruments. What kind of music do people encounter? What moves their hearts? And how do they shape their own musical sensibilities? The Showa era was overflowing with music that stirred people’s hearts. Countless pieces of music were etched into the very flesh and blood, the cells, and the deepest recesses of the memories of those who lived through that time. Sounds heard in everyday life; sounds remembered alongside landscapes encountered on journeys; voices and resonances that lingered in the heart from encounters with others. These countless waves of sound and vibrations in the air accumulate, shaping each person’s musical perspective and sensibility, and emerging as that person’s unique individuality. When you look at a person through the lens of music, you begin to see “who they truly are.” That is precisely what makes it so fascinating. What is the culmination of the musical elements within a single person? What has nurtured and shaped that sensibility? This work is an attempt to delve into the inner worlds of musicians who lived through the Showa era, to uncover the components that make up their music, and to bring to light the source of the sensibilities cultivated over time. A musical journey experienced through the diverse sounds of keyboard instruments. Unlike modern synthesizers that synthesize sounds using DAWs and computers, this is another form of “synthesis”—woven from the countless sounds, memories, experiences, and instruments encountered throughout a lifetime. It is, in essence, Mizuko Tsukatani’s unique *Goldberg Variations*, composed of the countless sounds that have colored her life. (1/2) POOH'SHOOP
