For more than 30 years, the seven symphonies of Sibelius have been the most important repertoire for Paavo Järvi, since his debut concert as a conductor in 1985, when he featured the First Symphony. However, he was very cautious about recording them, and finally recorded the complete works after becoming music director of the prestigious Orchestre de Paris in France. I don't believe in the Sibelius performance tradition. The Orchestre de Paris has no such tradition, and that is why we are able to grasp the work as it is and explore its depths without prejudice," he says enthusiastically. This is the greatest and most important legacy of Pavo's tenure as Music Director of the Orchestre de Paris from 2010-16. In 2015, Järvi was awarded the Sibelius Medal in recognition of his Sibelius performances with the Orchestre de Paris. The three pieces are indispensable for understanding Sibelius: No. 3, which is compact and ethnomusical and creates an intimate atmosphere and nostalgic feeling unique to "Scandinavia"; No. 6, which Järvi says "surprises me every time I conduct it"; and No. 7, a masterpiece that contains a world of impressive scale.
