Strauss' Tennyson, and this collection of Hindemith's songs on Rilke's poems, "The Life of Mary," reminds one of it. Gould described it as "the best cycle of songs ever written," and his use of the original version in this recording, rather than the popular revised version, reveals the true originality of this work. This is a moving masterpiece that could only have been possible with the enormous talent of Gould.
