Based on the non-fiction book *Defeat in the Summer of Shōwa 16* by Naoki Inose, this human drama depicts the “Total War Research Institute”—an organization that once actually existed in Japan—and the events leading up to the outbreak of war between Japan and the United States. This is the complete version of the NHK Special *Simulation: Defeat in the Summer of Shōwa 16*, which aired in August 2025, featuring approximately 40 minutes of additional scenes added to the drama segment. The cast features a star-studded lineup led by Sosuke Ikematsu as the protagonist, Ujita, alongside Taiga Nakano, Takanori Iwata, Aoi Nakamura, Takahiro Miura, Hayato Kunimura, Ryuta Sato, Yosuke Eguchi, and Koichi Sato. Directed, written, and edited by Yuya Ishii. The music is composed by Taro Iwashiro, marking their third collaboration following *The Moon* and *Why Do People Write Love Letters?*.
