On this debut release via Dead Oceans, listeners are guided by a narrator who is both ironic and compassionate, and by the voice of an underdog who has learned to balance sarcasm with conviction. The songs are understated yet reject self-pity; through pop melodies, sparkling yet poignant guitar, and vocals imbued with the purity of a boy in a choir, a carefully constructed altar skillfully expresses imperfection. Most of *BeautyLand* was recorded almost entirely by Mendez alone, directly into a makeshift home studio he set up in Philadelphia (a small room with no natural light).
