Description:
So Giulietta did not die after all? The maverick director Christof Loy tells the tragic story of two lovers Fabio Luisi conducts the Zurich Opera Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi A film of I Capuleti e i Montecchi, the masterpiece Bellini wrote at the age of 28, in a production by the boldly individual German director Christof Loy, with Fabio Luisi conducting the Zurich Opera. Bellini's source was Girolamo della Corte's history of Verona; Felice Romani based his Italian libretto on it, and the opera was first performed at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice in 1830. The story differs in several respects from Shakespeare's play. In thirteenth-century Verona the noble houses of Capuleti and Montecchi are sworn enemies. Capellio, whose son has been killed by Romeo, announces the marriage of his daughter Giulietta to Tebaldo so that Tebaldo may take revenge. But Romeo and Giulietta are in love, and the young couple, driven by their passion, choose death instead. Loy's staging is full of invention. The stage is divided into rooms by walls, and a revolving set hints at what lies before and after each scene. A silent "companion" for Romeo, visible only to Romeo and Giulietta, guides the unfolding of the story without a word. A mysterious old woman also appears in Giulietta's shadow, mirroring her every movement. At the climax, Romeo, seeing Giulietta in her death-like sleep, misreads the situation, takes poison and dies after a last exchange of words with her. The revolving stage turns, Giulietta moves into another room, and there stands the old woman - who is Giulietta herself. Loy's daring reading captures both passion and despair with striking force. Romeo is taken in a trouser role by the Metropolitan Opera star mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, with the highly promising coloratura soprano Olga Kulchynska as Giulietta. The strong supporting cast includes Benjamin Bernheim, Roberto Lorenzi and Alexei Botnarciuc. The "companion" is danced by the Polish dancer Gieorgij Puchalski. Under its music director Fabio Luisi, the Zurich Opera continues to pursue innovative new productions. King International
