La Reveuse

Description:

Let the enchanting sounds of La Revue transport you on a musical journey through 18th-century London Two albums by the early music ensemble La Revue are now available in a special value set. These two albums are themed around London circa 1720 and the 1740s. La Rêve was founded in 2004 by Benjamin Perrault and Florence Bolton. Their main repertoire consists of music from the 17th and 18th centuries. Benjamin Perrault studied the lute, theorbo, and Baroque guitar, and is active as a soloist and in ensembles such as Les Arts Florissants and Le Concert Spirituel. Florence Bolton began studying the recorder and harpsichord at the age of seven, but became captivated by bowed instruments and went on to specialize in the viola da gamba. She has also reportedly earned a master’s degree in Japanese. London in the 1720s was, above all, an era still deeply influenced by Corelli (1653–1713). During this period, demand for music in London was on the rise, attracting many foreign artists to settle there. It is believed that Londoners’ love of music drew the finest Italian violinists to the city. In 1714, Geminiani, one of Corelli’s most outstanding pupils, arrived in London and quickly gained popularity. Corelli’s works for violin were arranged for the recorder, making them more accessible to amateurs. The Concerto Grosso, Op. 6, included here has also been arranged for two recorders and basso continuo, and the order of the pieces has been rearranged. Furthermore, Babel’s concertos were performed by popular recorder players of the time during the intermissions of operas. Early 18th-century London was a hub of musical activity, and it also marked the final golden age of the recorder. This album features delightful and dazzling arrangements that bring to life the image of recorder players captivating their audiences, making for a truly exhilarating listening experience.
