After the stunning performance of Beethoven's "Destiny," Roth and Siecle's next challenge is the Symphony No. 3 "Hero," and the performance is even more impressive than the previous one. Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 "Heroes" is a revolutionary work, unparalleled at the time of its composition in 1804: 50 minutes long, too complex to perform without a conductor, and openly political in nature. Furthermore, there are clear signs of the Romantic style, such as the unstoppable outpouring of music that resembles a torrent or lava flow. As in his previous work, "Destiny," Lotto focuses on the revolutionary aspects of Beethoven's works, and couples them with French works of the same period to provide us with many suggestions. This time it is the overture to Meilleur's opera "Amazones. Meilleur was seven years older than Beethoven and was the leading French opera composer of the Napoleonic era. He had more in common with Beethoven than one might think, and was an orchestral craftsman. The similarities between Meilleur's Symphony No. 1 and Beethoven's No. 5 were also noted by Schumann. Pitched at 430 Hz, the surviving Beethoven-era wind instruments are no longer playable, so replicas are used.Lotto has performed "Hero" with orchestras all over the world, and he says that the finale coda or final variation lacks vitality and becomes dull on modern instruments, but on period instruments the impact of the accents can be emphasized, and Beethoven's choice of key is well understood, as all modern instruments have the same coloring. Beethoven's choice of tonality also clearly shows his intention of E-flat major. The performance times for each movement are 1:15'58", 2:14'28", 3:5'29", and 4:10'58", and while not particularly unusual, they sound faster than they actually are due to the clear tone, briskness, and propulsiveness of the music. The rhythmic sense, the tight form, and the tension are all superb. This is Lotto, and I don't think I've ever heard a "hero" as fresh as this one. King International
