After bidding farewell to orchestral and chamber music concerts and studio recordings, Sokolov has devoted himself to solo recitals, touring Europe each year to perform a single program. For fans, it has been a pilgrimage: in 2023 he gave about 70 concerts with music by Purcell and Mozart, always playing five or six encore pieces. This album includes two performances in Spain. The first half includes Purcell's three suites and six other works, plus encore pieces, at the Palacio de Festivales de Cantabria in Santander on August 18. And Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 13 and Adagio were recorded two days earlier at the Cursal International Congress Center in San Sebastián. Mozart's Adagio is perhaps the most melancholy piano work in Mozart's oeuvre. It is also the central work in this program, and everything moves toward it. Yet Sokolov does not emphasize the work's sombre mood.The musical journey concludes with a truly serene lament played as an encore. Rameau's "The Savages" and "Tambourin" evoke life, while Chopin's "Raindrops" prelude and mazurka in F minor evoke melancholy. In the final Prelude in E minor from Bach's "Mean Clavier" Sokolov deliberately uses an arrangement in B minor by Alexandre Giloti. Born in 1950, Sokolov began playing the piano at the age of five and studied at the Leningrad Conservatory, where he gave his first major recital at the age of 12 and won international attention in 1966 when he won the International Tchaikovsky Competition at age 16.
