Earl Sweatshirt, one of the U.S.’s foremost lyricists, releases “Some Rap Songs,” his third solo album in three years, dedicated to his father who passed away in 2018. After releasing his second album, *I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside*, in 2013, Earl Sweatshirt had been quiet for some time, but this new album breaks that silence. Inspired by the death of his father, Keoraptse Kgositsile, who passed away in July 2018, this album serves as a tribute to both his parents; on “Playing Possum,” the 13th track, both of his parents make guest appearances. The album also includes the lead single “Nowhere2go,” in which he sings about his journey through his father’s death—“Even when things don’t go well, I thank God and pray. I have no more requests to make”—as well as “TheMint” featuring NavyBlue, “On the Way!” featuring the up-and-coming New York group Standing on the Corner, among others, for a total of 15 tracks. Earl Sweatshirt has often sung about his parents in his songs, but this album stands out as a notable work in which he not only reaffirms his gratitude for their presence and influence but also sings about his “present self”—having grown from a child into an adult.
