Gidon Kremer at 75: the complete Teldec, Erato and Warner Classics (former EMI) recordings Kremer has avoided the well-trodden paths of the musical world, pursuing his explorations in a style entirely his own. Enquiry with Harnoncourt, kinship with Argerich, a passion for freedom and a search for authenticity shared with Schnittke and Part - all of it is evident in more than twenty years of recordings for the former EMI, Teldec and Erato. He was born in Riga, Latvia (then part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) on 27 February 1947, into a German-speaking family of musicians. He began the violin at the age of four and studied with David Oistrakh at the Moscow Conservatory from 1965 to 1973. He took third prize at the Queen Elisabeth International Competition in Brussels in 1967, won the Paganini International Competition in 1969 and the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow in 1970. Touring in Western Europe brought a sensational debut, and he gained wide renown at the Salzburg Festival and in the United States before leaving the Soviet Union for West Germany in 1980. A year later he founded a chamber music festival at Lockenhaus in Austria devoted to contemporary and unconventional repertoire, and in 1992 he created Kremerata Baltica, a chamber orchestra of young players from the three Baltic states. His repertoire ranges from Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart and Beethoven to Piazzolla, Part, John Adams, Philip Glass, Schnittke, Nono and Gubaidulina - the last three of whom wrote works for him. He has performed with Karajan, Bernstein, Abbado, Maazel, Rostropovich, Harnoncourt, Bashmet and Argerich. This box brings together all of his recordings for Erato, Teldec and the former EMI. * As the original couplings have been retained, some works in which Kremer does not perform are included. * Recordings made for Nonesuch are not included.
