Another popular English singer from the 1950s and 1960s, Norma Proctor, sings a selection of traditional songs. Vivienne's clear, penetrating soprano and impressive dramatic wit caught the attention of Benjamin Britten, who made his professional debut with the premiere of Britten's arrangement of "The Beggar's Opera. The "Songs of England" have much to offer. The repertoire spans four centuries, from Thomas Morley's Washington State Madrigal "The Time is May, the Festival of Flowers" to contemporary songs by Britten, Quilter, and Vaughan Williams. was released on 10" LP by Decca in 1955. Like Vivien, Proctor studied at the Royal Academy with Roy Henderson, one of England's foremost voice teachers.Proctor passed away in May 2017, and this disc, her first solo recital CD and described as a "wonderful contralto," is being reissued in the singer's memory.
