This album marks the recording debut on Germany’s Harmonia Mundi label for the duo of Davit Melkonian and Michael Baryan, both of Armenian descent and making waves in the field of period instrument performance. Bernhard Romberg (1767–1841) was an early Romantic German composer and cellist who contributed significantly to the development of the cello. He studied the cello under his father, gave his first concert at the age of seven, and performed with the Münster court orchestra. From 1790 onward, he served as a musician in the Bonn-Cologne court orchestra, where he met Beethoven; records also exist of a quartet performance featuring Beethoven (va), Anton Ries (vn), and Bernhard Romberg (vc). In Paris, he was known as the “Paganini of the cello.” Romberg also worked to improve the cello as an instrument; by modifying the shape of the fingerboard and bridge—making it easier to apply vibrato—he facilitated a more technical and romantically expressive style of playing, paving the way for the structural improvements that led to the modern cello. The cello crafted by the renowned Parisian master luthier Nicolas Lupo in response to these innovations is considered one of the finest instruments even today—so much so that it is sometimes referred to as the “Stradivarius of Paris.” For this recording, I used the original 1820 Nicolas Lupo cello, along with a bow dating from around 1800 and bare gut strings. Furthermore, I thoroughly studied the playing manual written by Romberg in preparation for this recording. “Opus 5” is an early collection consisting of three sonatas; the technically demanding passages in the upper register are characteristic of Romberg, while the melodies, brimming with gentle and warm lyricism, are filled with romanticism within their simplicity. It is also said that these works exerted a strong influence on Brahms’s Cello Sonata No. 1. While Romberg’s works are featured in cello method books and are familiar to cello students, this recording presents a magnificent performance—one that is entirely different from anything heard before—brought to life precisely by this instrument and playing technique.
