Two brilliant concertos by Ukrainian-born Russian composer Thomas de Hartmann are revived! This is an album of two concertos performed by world-renowned composers who were fascinated by the works of the Ukrainian-born Russian composer Thomas de Hartmann (1884-1956).Thomas de Hartmann studied composition with Arensky and Taneyev, and piano with Rimsky-Korsakov. His concerto works are littered with dazzling melodies and effective techniques. The Violin Concerto and Cello Concerto were composed in 1943 and 1935, respectively. The works, with their magnificent orchestration and emotionally rich solos, fascinated Joshua Bell and Matt Haimovitz, and they have now recorded them with great anticipation. Thomas de Hartmann is known for his collaboration with painter Wassily Kandinsky. The cover of this CD features Kandinsky's masterpiece "Transverse Line" (1925). The CD does not come with a Japanese obi. I received the score of the violin concerto several years ago from Efrem Marder of The Thomas de Hartmann Project, who is passionate about promoting the works of Thomas de Hartmann. I was immediately struck by the emotional depth of the concerto and surprised that such a powerful and engaging work had been forgotten by many classical music audiences, including myself. The work is as relevant today as it was when it was composed in 1943. I hope that Thomas de Hartmann's music, performed with the INSO-Lviv Symphony Orchestra led by Daria Stasevska, will resonate with many people not only in his native Ukraine, but around the world."(Joshua Bell) The Ukrainian-born composer Thomas de Hartmann has close ties to his homeland, and although not Jewish himself, he was deeply influenced by Jewish music and culture from an early age. In his Cello Concerto, Op. 57, the prayerful second movement features a melody that mimics the voice of a hazzan (solo singer of an anthem), and the final movement features Ukrainian folk music. This remarkable work is a Ukrainian treasure and a significant contribution to the cello repertoire of the time. I am deeply indebted to Maestro Dennis Russell Davis and the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra. (King International)
