Bach (1685-1750)

Description:

Gardiner & Monteverdi Choir's latest disc in 2017 features the rarely performed Magnificat in E-flat majorIn 2000, the 250th anniversary of Bach's death, the Monteverdi Choir led by Gardiner and the English Baroque Soloists toured the world under the title "Pilgrimage to Bach Cantatas. They performed and recorded 198 cantatas worldwide (SDG-186). Gardiner has also released a series of new recordings, including the B minor Mass (SDG-722), the John Passion (SDG-712), and the Matthew Passion (SDG-725), and is continuing to evolve and mature. This release features the Magnificat BWV 243a, the Lutheran Mass BWV 233, and Cantata No. 151. Gardiner recorded the Magnificat in 1983. The Magnificat exists in two different manuscripts, each in a different key. BWV 243a in E-flat major is recorded as having been premiered on Bach's first Christmas in Leipzig in 1723. BWV243a was the first Christmas work of Bach's glorious Leipzig period.Recorded in 1983 is BWV 243 in D major, a revised manuscript for the feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is usually performed in D major. Although the two pieces are in contrast, partly because of their different purposes, it is significant that Gardiner's hand performed both manuscripts. Also included is a re-recording of the Christmas cantata No. 151, which was already recorded in "Bach Cantata Pilgrimage. And then there is the Mass in F major, BWV 233, all of Bach's masses, with the exception of the Mass in B minor, which is Lutheran, BWV 233-236, four in all, most of which are adaptations or parodies of other cantatas. This is new repertoire for Gardiner, who says that no work should be taken lightly because it is an appropriation or parody. Gardiner, who has been deeply involved with Bach's works for many years, conveys the true value of the works with his unique approach. King International
