Beat! 14-21. music for a small three-part opera (1929) Performer London Symphony Orchestra Sir Simon Rattle, conductor Magdalena Kozenaer(Mezzo-soprano/Anna) Andrew Staples(Tenor/Father)* Alessandro Fischer(Tenor/Brother) Ross Langobin(Baritone/Brother)+ Florian Bösch(bass-baritone/mother)# Recorded live at the Barbican Hall, London, April 28, 2022 (SACD Hybrid) 5.1 multi-channel A scathing critique of capitalist society, "The Seven Deadly Sins" sharply highlights the eternal battle between money and morality, however,The music is very enjoyable and entertaining. This was the last joint work by Kurt Weill and Berthold Brecht as a duo. Here Brecht's pen denounces the lewd and materialistic values of the Americas and offers a modern take on the seven biblical vices. When Hitler came to power, Weill, a Jew, and Brecht, a Marxist, left Germany, and Weill came to terms with capitalist America and began writing popular musicals for Broadway with other collaborators. Halfway out of her home, Anna is required to return in seven years to earn enough money to build a small house on the Mississippi River. In a mythical America that neither Brecht nor Weill ever visited, Anna faces new challenges in seven different places. She returns home to face the question of which is right and which is profitable, sloth at home in Louisiana, pride in Memphis, anger in LA, gluttony in Philadelphia, lust in Boston, greed in Tennessee (and later Baltimore), envy in San Francisco, and so on.... In the end, she returns home safely with her money, facing the questions of which is right and which is profitable... Her parents (with Bass Alliton as her mother) and two brothers in a male voice quartet appear as a chorus that explains the events. Sir Simon Rattle, the London Symphony Orchestra, and a stellar lineup of soloists bring the work to life in a sound that is as entertaining as it is delightful despite its content. Other works include Weill's "Music from a Little Three-Penny Opera," and the LSO, led by Rattle, is a virtuoso orchestra with a pleasing wind instrument sound. (King International)
