Description:

Max, a young hunter, becomes a troubled composer! Weber's masterpiece "The Magic Bullet Shooter," staged in an innovative production by Christian Röth, with stunning singing by Andreas Schager & Camilla Nylund.2018 Vienna State Opera, directed by Christian Röth, conducted by Tomasz Netpils, Camilla Nylund, Weber's masterpiece opera The Magic Bullet Archer, performed by Andreas Schager and others, tells a story set in the forests of Bohemia just after the end of the 30 Years War, and Weber's simple but effective music has earned it the sobriquet "German National Opera." The work is truly Romantic, revolving around the contrast between the real and unreal worlds, consciousness and unconsciousness, or, in Weber's words, "the life of the hunter" and "domination by demonic forces. The first part of the piece is characterized by familiar melodies and bright sounds, but gradually diminishing chords, including the three whole notes, which have been called "the devil of music," and dim, pale tones lead the listener deep into the Wolf Valley. This contrast has already been used in the overture, and the explosive C-major chords of the finale are a straightforward expression of the entire opera. Taking Mozart's "The Magic Flute" and Beethoven's "Fidelio" as a starting point, Weber has taken the German-language Zingspiel to a new level. In this production, Christian Rate has created an intelligent and innovative staging to enhance the enjoyment of Weber's wonderful music. To this end, he has decided that it is not enough to portray Max as a bourgeois young hunter who must prove his manhood at a shooting competition, but also as a composer suffering from a "creative block," a creative slump that Weber himself suffered from. The opera also offers the luxury of hearing the Helden tenor Andreas Schager, who has dominated the world's top opera houses, singing Max, and the Finnish lyric-dramatic soprano Kamilla Nylund singing the heartbreaking and stunning Agathe. Kamilla Nylund was awarded the title of Court Singer by the Vienna State Opera a year later in 2019. King International
