Description:

Verdi and Mahler performed by Zubin Mehta and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino—a CD that was only briefly available a few years ago has made a welcome comeback on MAGGIOLIVE! Meta became chief conductor of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in 1985, so this fruitful partnership has now lasted for 30 years. Although it’s called the Florence May Music Festival (held from April through June), the orchestra and chorus for the operas and concerts at the Teatro Comunale di Firenze—where the season begins in September—are also known as the Florence May Music Festival Orchestra and —meaning that Mehta leads Florence’s opera house year-round. This CD features Verdi’s “Te Deum” from June 1, 1996, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 from February 4, 2000. Both are live recordings from the Teatro Comunale di Firenze. These live performances in Florence are magnificent masterpieces that convey the close collaboration between Mehta and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra. True to the Italian orchestral tradition, both the strings and brass sing brightly and resonantly in this uplifting interpretation of Mahler, which aligns perfectly with Mehta’s expansive musicality. Moreover, the performance is brimming with joy, and the music conveys how every member of the orchestra is captivated by Mehta’s artistry and places their complete trust in him. While it may not quite match the precision of a top-tier symphony orchestra, the musical richness that compensates for this—especially given that it’s a live recording—is a major attraction. The powerful climax in the coda of the final movement is typical of Mehta, and after the performance, the Florentine audience rewarded him with a thunderous ovation and a resounding “Bravo!” Note that the first violins and double basses are positioned on the left side of the stage, while the second violins are on the right. Although Mehta also enjoys conducting Verdi, his last recording of the *Te Deum* was likely in 1970 during his time in Los Angeles, when he recorded the *Quattro Canti* for DECCA. With the addition of the choir, Mehta and the Florence May Music Festival truly show their true colors; from the very beginning, both the orchestra and the choir are imbued with a deep and profound emotion, and one can feel their abundant love for Verdi in every detail. This performance makes it clear why Mehta has been so active for 30 years in Italy, a country that holds Verdi in such high regard. King International
