Hindemith's exceptional love for the viola is expressed. Most orchestras treated the viola as a "behind-the-scenes" instrument, and there were few opportunities for the instrument to be featured in a spectacular way. However, Hindemith, himself an accomplished viola player, wrote many works for the viola. Of course, Hindemith was familiar with the capabilities of other instruments, but he had a special attachment to the sound of the viola, and his exquisite works are in the repertoire of today's viola players. It is interesting to note that while his early works have a Romantic flavor, his later works shift more toward neoclassicism.Euler, who performs, is a world-renowned virtuoso who has performed with the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and in 1991 was appointed professor at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Graz.
