Description:

Eva Saladin Challenge #2! Veracini's "Selected Academic Sonatas"! Swiss-Dutch baroque violinist Eva Saladin's second Challenge Classics release. This ambitious album is an anthology of selected favorite movements from Veracini's masterpiece "Academic Sonatas, Op.2", based on the composer's own suggestions. Born in Florence, Veracini was considered one of the greatest violinists of his time and lived in London, Dusseldorf, Venice, and Dresden, where he achieved international fame. Among his vast body of works, the "Academic Sonatas for Violin and Bass, Op. 2," published in London and Florence in 1744, are the best known today. Despite the high technical demands, these sonatas are presented with a natural ease and playfulness, thanks to a unique approach. It is a long work in three to five movements, including a capriccio, etc., and does not follow the standard Italian chamber or church sonata format of the time. Veracini himself stated in his preface that "...two or three movements chosen at one's own discretion are sufficient to form a sonata of adequate length," and Saladin followed this suggestion by carefully selecting his favorite movements from the 12 sonatas and consolidating them into one album. The contrasting parts of each sonata have been chosen to complete the program with harmonious tonality and clear dramaturgy. Eva Saladin studied modern violin with Case Koolmans and baroque violin with Lucie van Dal at the Amsterdam Conservatory, and with Laila Schajek and David Plantier at the Schola Cantorum Basel.A freelance musician based in Basel (Switzerland) with a repertoire ranging from the early 17th century to the early 19th century, he is a member of the Ensemble Odyssey, of which he is the leader, La Chetra Baroque Orchestra Basel, Li Angeli Geneva, Il Profonde, He was artist-in-residence at the Utrecht Festival of Ancient Music in the 2020/21 season and will be professor of Baroque Violin at the University of Music and Arts Vienna from 2024.
