Description:
The second trio effort from Austrian guitarist Moospeel, acclaimed by The New Yorker as a "shining light" in the current jazz guitar scene. Moospeil, who has released three albums as a leader on ECM, made his trio debut in 2014 with "Driftwood" and has since released two quintet albums. Longtime collaborator Brian Blade (ds) is with the trio on this album, but Larry Grenadier, who played bass on the previous album, does not participate this time, and Scott Colley takes over bass duties, giving the group a more dynamic, earthy bass sound. Moonspiel, who uses both acoustic and electric guitars, performs mostly melodic originals, but also tackles the standards "Everything I Love" and "I'll Remember April" and the bebop tune "Ride" for the first time. Also worth listening to is the solo guitar piece "Solo Kanon in 5/4," a baroque-inspired piece with an electric guitar delay sound.
