Description:

Here comes the third Blue Note album in two years from Nduduzo Makatini, the hottest pianist from South Africa, who is highly acclaimed in the contemporary jazz scene in New York City. This is his first release in two years since his last album, "In The Spirit Of Ntu," and features 11 tracks divided into three parts: "Libations," "Water Spirits," and "Inner Attainment. It seems to transcend existing notions of music production and presents a vision of creative mysticism at its most profound to date. Macatini himself said of this work that unlike his previous works, "I often expressed my intentions through composition or some conceptual paradigm. I use sound as a way of communicating with a supernatural voice. The sound, he says, is designed to stir the hearts of listeners who love John Coltrane, Pharaoh Sanders, Shabaka Hutchings, and others. The recording was done in a trio formation with Zwaraki-Duma Belle Le Per, a bassist of South African descent who has toured extensively with the band, and Francisco Mela, a Cuban-born drummer. The album is named after a goddess of the indigenous Zulu faith in South Africa, and the songs are divided into three parts, following the number three, which was emphasized in the cosmology of the Yoruba, an African tribe. From a broader perspective, the number three is related to concepts such as infinity, immortality, and continuity, as well as ancestors, those present, and those to be born in the future, and the result is a sound that incorporates such spiritual inspiration from Africa. Of this work, Makatini said, "This work seeks to invite people into a way of cultivating a way of life that seeks freedom. By singing the songs of Unonkubulwani, I want to invite everyone to a new form of humanism." [Personnel] Nduduzo Makhathini(p) Zwelakhe-Duma Bell le Pere(b) Francisco Mela(ds)
