Description:

The veteran guitarist, whose wide-ranging activities over the past half century have made him a favorite not only of jazz and fusion musicians but also of all music fans, releases the first solo album of his career on ECM! This is his second album. With a career spanning more than half a century, John Scofield is known for his influential collaborations with jazz greats such as Miles Davis and Joe Henderson, as well as his numerous genre-bending leadership works, but this is the first solo guitar recording of his career! Drawing on decades of experience, he performs intimately through styles and idioms he has traversed to date. Talking to himself, he uses a loop machine to play solos to his own tasteful chord and rhythmic accompaniment. He said, "I think there's a subtlety that I've acquired from playing alone at home. I'm so used to playing with a band that there is a certain musicality to it. That's gone, replaced by a more subtle approach that pinpoints the beauty of the strings. When I play solo, I make little guitar loops on the spot, [...]. It's as if I'm playing with someone else," he commented. As he titled the album after his own name, he delves deep into his own past, tracing back to his roots and the heroes of his youth. The result is "John Scofield," a balanced and thorough portrait of the musician, linking the music that shaped him with the music that has influenced and trained him since then. The album contains 13 impeccable songs, ranging from his own originals, standard numbers, trad, rock and roll, and country that he has played for many years, to ballads by Keith Jarrett. Each song is accompanied by a brief commentary by Scofield himself, making this one of ECM's most famous albums of the 21st century. <Recorded by John Scofield (el-g, looper) at Top Story Studios, Katonah, New York, August 2021.
