Description:
A Collection of Works by John Field Other Than Nocturnes ◆England → Russia: John Field (1782–1837), known as the originator of the piano nocturne, studied under Muzio Clementi in London. While working as a demonstrator at his teacher’s piano factory, he mastered a unique playing technique that brought out the instrument’s full acoustic potential. He later emigrated to Russia, where he enjoyed immense popularity as a pianist and teacher in the high society circles of St. Petersburg and Moscow. ◆ Features works spanning his early to late periods: Includes everything from arrangements of hornpipe dances to the free-form nocturnes of his very late years. [Included Works] ◆ Piano Sonata Collection, Op. 1: Consists of four pieces in the classical two-movement form. ◆ Rondo on Del Carlo’s Hornpipe: A work that brilliantly reimagines for the piano the lively melody of the “hornpipe,” a dance that was all the rage in London. ◆ “Waltz of Longing”: A work composed in Russia at a time when demand for sentimental salon waltzes was on the rise. ◆Variations on a Russian Folk Song: A lyrical and brilliant set of variations based on the melancholic melody of the old folk song “My Beloved.” ◆Unpublished Andante: A free-form, nocturne-like piece written in Moscow shortly before his death. [Composer] ◆John Field: Of his 54-year life, he spent 10 years in Ireland during his childhood, 10 years in England during his formative years, and 34 years in Russia; he died in Moscow in 1837. In short, he worked primarily in Russia for his entire career as a professional musician, and since he had several influential students, including Mikhail Glinka, the nocturne became widespread among Russian composers, and Russia came to be regarded as the birthplace of the nocturne. Field’s fame in this genre continued even after his death, to the extent that his name appears in Tolstoy’s novels *Childhood* [1852] and *War and Peace* [1869]. [Performer] ◆ Tyler Hay (piano): A British virtuoso pianist born in Kent in 1994. [Recording] ◆ Date: May 16 & 17, 2025. ◆Location: Westfest Church, Schiedam (near Rotterdam), South Holland, Central Netherlands. [Product Specifications] ◆Case: Digipak. ◆Booklet: English. 8 pages. Includes liner notes provided by the label.
