Le Tarans Lyriques, led by Rousset, has recorded this Mozart work. It is the religious drama *The Rescue of Betulia*, written by Mozart in 1771 when he was 15 years old. It is Mozart’s only completed oratorio. The libretto, written by Saleta Metastaso in 1734, had been set to music by composers such as Yomelli before Mozart, and Salieri also composed a version based on the same libretto in 1821 after Mozart’s time. Mozart composed this work at the request of Prince Jiménez of Aragona, but there are no records indicating that it was ever performed. Although it is classified as an oratorio, its style is reminiscent of opera seria; even considering just the opening overture, one cannot help but be amazed anew at Mozart’s prodigious talent in composing such a work at the age of 15. Here is the definitive recording of the genius Mozart’s only oratorio, featuring the magnificent orchestral performances of Rousset and Les Tarans Lyriques! The plot follows the Jewish town of Bethulia, which is under attack. Amital, a noblewoman of Israel, urges the town’s leader, Ozias, to surrender to the besieging army, negotiate with them, and ease the people’s fears. However, the story tells of how the chaste widow Judith infiltrates the enemy camp, lures the enemy general—who has let his guard down due to her beauty and fallen asleep after drinking at a banquet—into a trap, beheads him, and saves the town. This story, a symbol of female chastity and courage, has been widely used and is well-known since the Baroque period. The soprano Amital performs the dazzling arias. Here, Sandrine Piau takes on the role of Amital. The tribal chiefs, Kabri and Karmi, serve as narrators in the story. The role of Giuditta, sung by an alto, is played by the Italian singer Iervolino. She has a rich, full-bodied voice and performs a wide range of works, from Handel to Verdi. The chorus is performed by Accentus.
