Recorded two months after the band's first concert in Japan in 1961, this gem was not released until seven years later. The band consists mainly of original compositions by Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, and other members, and the drumming of the great Blakey explodes on "Afrique," an exciting number in 6/8 time, with Morgan and Shorter also playing substantial solos. Morgan and Shorter also deliver well-developed solos.
