Description:
Wagner's (1813-1883) last opera, "Parsifal," is a supreme treasure of mankind and contains a powerful message. Since Wagner conceived of this work, various interpretations have been made to express his own image of Parsifal, but this production, produced by Stephen Langridge to commemorate the bicentennial of Wagner's birth, carefully portrays Parsifal as an innocent spirit with a large body who matures through adventure and experience. The process of maturing through adventure and experience is carefully expressed. The simplicity of the set and the modern costumes are painful, and at times the audience must share in the pain, but this may be saved by Wagner's sublime music. The great Wagnerian tenor Simon O'Neill is flawless, especially in his God-inspired singing after the Good Friday music in the third act.Finley's compelling Amfortas, René Parpe's cool-headed Grunemannz, the rather cool Wight's Klingzor, and Denoke singing Kundry, the key to the story. The music of the orchestra, conducted by Pappano, warmly illuminates this tale of suffering and purification. The sound of the strings, which one cannot help but feel that this story is about "salvation," is one of the highlights of the performance. Naxos Japan
