A Modern *Eugene Onegin* from the Powerhouse Team of Jansons (Conductor) and Haarheim (Director) The Netherlands Opera’s production of *Eugene Onegin*, conducted by Maris Jansons and featuring the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the pit, was arguably the most talked-about production of 2011. As this marked Jansson’s first opera conducting engagement in five years, it had already attracted significant attention from the opera world even before the opening; he masterfully guided the orchestra, avoiding excessive sentimentality while drawing out the maximum splendor and crystalline beauty from Tchaikovsky’s music. Director Heirheim was named “Director of the Year” by *Opernwelt* magazine in 2007, and and received widespread acclaim for his new production of *Parsifal* at the 2009 Bayreuth Festival; he is currently one of the most sought-after opera directors in Europe—particularly in the German-speaking world—thanks to his popularity and talent. In this production of *Eugene Onegin*, he employs his signature use of flashbacks to keep the focus on Onegin’s story throughout all three acts. The kaleidoscopic stage, which presents a succession of historical Russian motifs, achieves a magnificent effect thanks to Philipp Fürhofer’s beautiful and ingenious set design. Among the singers, Bo Skoufs’ Onegin is outstanding. Together with Stoyanova as Tatyana, they deliver a high level of acting and singing, resulting in a performance of rare perfection.
