Description:
The works of Greek composer Georgios Aksiotis, born in 1875 in Ukraine to a father who was a trader, settled with his family in Athens upon his father's return in 1887, began studying music upon entering law school around 1892, and went to Naples around 1895. He studied for three years at the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella in Naples, where he absorbed the Italian Verismo method of expressing emotion, graduated with honors, and returned to Greece with his friend and fellow student Georg Lambertet. In opposition to the German-oriented music education in Greece at that time, he started a movement for educational reform by publishing a book entitled "Kritiki," which aimed at reforming music education, but he encountered strong opposition and had to withdraw from musical activities. Perhaps because of this, his works were neither published nor performed. In this album, we hear six of his works revised and restored by conductor Byron Fidetzis. Axiotis had an extraordinary sensitivity to instrumental balance and timbre, and his works are characterized by a lyricism that is reminiscent of the late Romanticism, as well as a skillful depiction of nature, resulting in a grandeur that is reminiscent of film music.
