Description:
Completed and premiered in 1947, Symphony No. 6, the fifth in the Allsopp & São Paulo Symphony Orchestra's Prokofiev series, is an extremely difficult work that is a response to the "Hymn to Victory" of No. 5, which was premiered in 1945 and depicts the sacrifices of war. The piece reflects the sentiments of Prokofiev (1891-1953), whose health was deteriorating at the time. The year after the premiere under Mravinsky's direction, the piece was subjected to Zidanov's criticism (control of avant-garde art of the time), and eventually lost its performance for a long period of time. This was also a cause of the lack of performance opportunities for a long period of time, which hindered the understanding of the piece. Allsopp's meticulous conducting balances the lyrical and aggressive aspects of the piece. The Waltz Suite, premiered in the same year, is a collection of six waltzes taken from his own operas and ballets, a melancholy yet accessible collection. Naxos Japan
