A live recording by Julio Resende that pushes fado "beyond its boundaries." It represents a new pinnacle of fado jazz, where the piano sings and memories intertwine with improvisation. A live recording from 2015 by Julio Resende, one of Portugal’s leading pianists, is being reissued on Rice Records. Starting from classical music and moving toward jazz, he has been a central figure in the contemporary Portuguese jazz scene and is known for carving out his own unique musical world rooted in fado. Born in 1982 in Faro, the central city of the Algarve region in southern Portugal, and raised in the nearby port town of Olhão, Resende became familiar with the piano from an early age. For him, the piano was not merely an instrument, but a form of play and a means of self-expression. While studying classical music at the Faro Conservatory, he eventually discovered the appeal of improvisation—unbound by sheet music—and became deeply immersed in jazz. In 2001, he moved to Lisbon, where he studied philosophy at Universidade Nova de Lisboa while beginning his performing career at the renowned jazz club “Clube de Portugal.” He subsequently studied jazz at Paris 8 University and broadened his international perspective by participating in workshops at The New School and Berklee College of Music. After making his debut with the album "DaAlma" in 2007, he released works such as "AssimFalavaJazzatustra" and "YouTasteLikeaSong," establishing his reputation with a style that combines chamber-music-like structure with improvisation. While focusing primarily on trio and solo performances, he has continued to explore forms of expression that transcend genre boundaries. Furthermore, since the 2010s, he has significantly expanded the scope of his activities by creating works that incorporate electronics, composing film scores, and participating in the pop project "Alexander Search" with Salvador Sobral.
