[Exploring Late Baroque Musical Exchanges Between Northern and Southern Europe Through the Work of the Viennese Italian Composer Caldara] Caldara, a composer born in Venice slightly before Vivaldi, was active throughout Italy before entering the service of the Imperial Court in Vienna in 1715. While his career spanned both Italy and the German-speaking regions to the south of the Alps, this album features a selection of Caldara’s works paired with music by composers from the preceding generation in Germany—who were heavily influenced by Italian music—as well as by his contemporaries and those who traveled between the two regions, offering insight into the musical exchanges between the north and south at that time. The album is performed by The Banshees, a group formed by four female early-music performers who are active in a wide range of roles at the forefront of the French music scene. Performed in a trio sonata formation consisting of two violins, a cello, and a keyboard, the ensemble’s bold interpretations—which navigate the space between improvisational expression and refined stylistic sensibility—combined with the carefully considered selection and sequencing of the pieces, create a captivating experience that compels the listener to keep moving forward. The title, “48 Degrees North,” refers to the line that runs through the southern German-speaking region where Caldara ultimately settled. The album features works by Marini, a master of early Venetian Baroque; Froberger, who traveled between Rome and Vienna; Legrenzi—Calderara’s teacher, who left behind a collection of works dedicated to the Emperor of Vienna—and Muffat, who was born in the Alsace region through which the 48th parallel runs and sought to harmonize the styles of various nations—the musicality of these 17th-century masters is undeniable.
