[A Detailed Exploration of the Charm of C.P.E. Bach’s Three Masterpieces for Cello] Having received a thorough musical education from his father, Johann Sebastian Bach, and having served King Frederick II of Prussia for many years, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was appointed music director of the City of Hamburg as the successor to Telemann, who had also been his godfather. His three surviving cello concertos are believed to have been composed during the 1750s, while he was working for the Prussian royal court, as pieces to be performed at gatherings of music lovers in Berlin. All three pieces possess a dramatic character. Although they are arrangements for cello of works that also survive as concertos for keyboard or flute, they are played primarily in a relatively low register. The solo part, which at times features poignant melodies in the upper register, possesses a unique charm characteristic of this instrument, and remains part of the repertoire for many cellists today. Canadian Baroque cellist Eleanor Fry, who is well-versed in the history of the cello’s origins and development dating back to before the 17th century, performs these three works with the Academia de Dissonanti—a group of trusted musical colleagues—offering a meticulous interpretation that pays close attention to every detail, delving into the very essence of their charm. She masterfully executes the solo parts—which often feature rapidly shifting, sometimes contrasting emotional expressions and frequent shifts across a wide range even within short phrases—with precise bowing, incorporating exquisite portamento at just the right moments to keep the listener captivated.
