Louise Farinque was one of the most respected pianists, composers, and educators in 19th-century Paris. As the first woman to serve as a professor at the Paris Conservatoire for 30 years—and a composer praised by Robert Schumann—she left a brilliant legacy while defying the misogyny prevalent in the musical world of her time. This fourth volume is a continuation of the “Themes and Variations” series, which occupies a significant place in her piano compositions. It focuses on four major works published between 1833 and 1836, a period that can be considered the peak of her career. The collection features works emblematic of 19th-century Parisian salon culture, including the world premiere recording of “Variations on a Favorite Gallop,” “Italienne,” which brilliantly develops famous melodies from bel canto operas by Bellini and Carafò, and the technically demanding and dramatic “Brilliant Variations,” written after meticulous study of popular operas of the time. In addition to these, the album includes the “Allemande Collection”—another world premiere recording—a charming work dedicated to her beloved 9-year-old daughter, Victoire. The program is designed to allow listeners to fully appreciate Faurank’s diverse expressive range. Performing throughout the series is Maria Strathigou, a leading authority on Falanc. She is passionate about promoting 19th-century female composers and is highly regarded in both research and performance circles, having presented on “The Performance of Louise Falanc’s Works” at an international conference held in New Zealand in 2018.
