Hailing from the Valencia region of Spain, Bonal studied with Emmanuel Balza in Barcelona and with Minneke van der Velden in The Hague. He won the 2021 Catalan Music Award, which led to the opportunity to produce this album. The cleverly programmed track order centers on music from the 17th and early 18th centuries, when the viola da gamba enjoyed its greatest popularity as a solo instrument. It features works by French masters like Marin Marais, who preferred the gamba family over the violin family, and Bach's unaccompanied cello suites, often performed on viola da gamba in recent years due to their French dance suite form. Her interpretation is masterful, demonstrating a deep understanding of each work's character and stylistic sensibility. While the unaccompanied works by Schenk and Telemann, representing the pinnacle of late Baroque instrumental music, are certainly noteworthy, the solo pieces by the extraordinary Hume, active from the late Elizabethan era through the 17th century, are truly breathtaking. His performance masterfully and naturally exploits the viola da gamba's potential as a plucked string instrument.Utilizing the same tuning as the guitar, pieces like "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" and "After the Dream"—often performed on cello—surprise delightfully by unexpectedly applying Baroque breathing and technique to Romantic works.
