Daisy Kennedy

Biddulph, an energetic reissuer of historical violin recordings, has recently broadened its antennae to include recordings dating back more than 100 years. Daisy Kennedy was born in South Australia in January 1893 and began playing the violin at the age of 7. At the age of 15, she caught the eye of Jan Kubelik, who visited Australia and recommended her to his own teacher Otakar Szewczyk, who took her to study in Prague and Vienna. He made his successful debut in Vienna and London in 1911. In addition to her outstanding technique, it is reported that her stage performances were strongly engaging. She was one of the most popular figures among audiences, composers, and performers on the British musical stage before and after World War I. However, her popularity, combined with a demanding schedule and family obligations, led to her retirement in 1937, and when she died in London in 1988, her ashes were scattered in her native Adelaide Hills, Australia. Nigel Kennedy was her cousin's grandson. What is interesting in listening to recordings from this period is that they convey the performance style and repertoire of the time.Kennedy's playing is basically neat, but the use of portamento is a sign of the times. In addition to her solid technique in the fast tempo pieces, her lyrical expression in the slow movement of the concerto, which she described as "pure emotion, the sensibility of a poet," is also a treat to listen to. She held a concert series entitled "Music of the 19th and 20th Centuries," but in the period around 1920, it was "contemporary music" itself. This album is also a valuable source of information, as it contains works that were not yet written at the time of recording. According to the label, this CD contains all of Daisy Kennedy's authorized recordings, but in addition, Plevna nota by Hubaye and Paradise by Krakauer, for which test recordings have been discovered, are being released for the first time. The booklet includes four photographs of Kennedy, plus a poster advertising her recordings, and a 13-page detailed, passionate and sympathetic commentary (English only) by Jonathan Woolf.
