Description:

Nicholas Colon & Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra's long-awaited second Sibelius album is the magnificent Symphony No. 5! The four pieces with Tetzlaff are also outstanding. The Chief Conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra has been a Finn since the orchestra was founded in 1927, but the British conductor Nicholas Colon has turned a new page in the history of the orchestra. He was appointed chief conductor after only one guest appearance, and his tenure was extended after he took office in September 2021, having established a high reputation both at home and abroad. This is the second Sibelius album since the duo's debut Symphony No. 7 and others (released in May 2022). The Fifth Symphony is alive with Kolon's lucid and sensitive music-making, which was demonstrated in the previous album, and gives the music not only brightness and magnificence, but also depth through the shadows created by the movement of the inner voices. The orchestra's distinctive dark sound in the fading passages is also an appealing feature of this orchestra. Colon's skillful conducting is also a gift, as the gradation from dark to light becomes richer, making the climax seem even more brilliant. The four symphonies with Tetzlaff are just as attractive as the symphonies. He recorded the complete works for violin and orchestra by Sibelius in 2002, so one can imagine that these pieces have been in his repertoire for a long time. His performances at that time were brilliant sounding, crisp and dynamic, with the symphonic magnificence of the music. On the other hand, in this recording, the details are thoroughly polished, the shadows are deep, and the emotions are richer than in his recent Brahms and Schubert recordings, giving the music more psychological drama. This is an outstanding performance that approaches the true value of these pieces, which are different from salon-style pieces or virtuoso pieces. In the Serenade No. 1 and "The Swan Princess," some of the sound patterns appear similar to those of Symphony No. 5, making the whole album a pleasure to listen to and discover. Naxos Japan
